The BLIMP Bus Lane (Bus Lane with Intermittent Priority) is a dynamic bus lane. They operate only when a bus is going to cross the street in which the operation is to be applied.
Through this idea, the bus lanes on the main roads of a city, will be used only when needed. Buses will have sensors which they will activate the vertical marking (Variable Message Signs-VMS traffic signs which will be placed in the bus lane) as far as the horizontal marking (In-pavement lights which will be placed on the road surface). When a bus will approach the bus lane both vertical & horizontal marking will be activated in order to inform drivers (who they already use legally the bus lane) in order to use a different traffic lane of the road. After the bus transit from this specific road section the bus lane will be part of the general traffic again (VMS signs will inform the drivers). This measure has been successfully implemented in Melbourne (Australia) and in Lisbon (Portugal).
